Juneteenth marks the day—June 19, 1865—when federal troops arrived in Galveston, Texas, led by Union Army general Gordon Granger. He announced General Order No. 3 that proclaimed freedom for all enslaved people in Texas, two years after President Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation.
