- To begin, we listen. We offer encouragement and support for our children's projects and appreciation of their concerns. When they are excited, we share their excitement. When they are anxious, frustrated or disappointed, we offer empathy, solace and understanding.... Patient listening has gone out of style in our current preoccupation with "strategies" and finding quick solutions to a child's problematic behavior....
- We can also let them know that we know how they feel -- because we have also had these feelings....
- We can help them put their disappointments in perspective....
- And we should let them know that, win or lose, we are proud of them for their effort....
- When we need to criticize, we should criticize thoughtfully and gently. Kids are kids, and they will make mistakes. So do we....
