Healing Tools for ACEs & Trauma

Tapping_Points AngelicJourneys.comHere are tools available “right now” which I use anytime, even at 3 am when friends or therapist can’t be reached (tho’ I do leave voice mails and it helps enormously. Ask them to turn off their phone on retiring, then try it.) When we learn in infancy that we’re not wanted to exist, it can wire our primitive brain stem for fear and even panic (developmental trauma). (Tapping diagram by AngelicJournies.com)

EMDR and tapping in particular have been able to calm my worse short-term traumatic fear attacks and “freezes.”  Fight-flight is when we’re in panic cortisol flood mode; but the body can only stay in fight-flight for a limited time.  If no one comes to make us feel safe, the brain stem puts us into “freeze,” tech term “dissociation.”  The stress chemicals get frozen into our body muscles, nerves, etc and sit there, causing the diseases documented by the ACE Study.  These tools eased my level of panic over time, too.

But I still say: “Don’t Try This at Home” — almost no one can heal alone.  It’s ok to calm down at 3 am, but isolating is a recipe for trauma disaster.  Only a good attachment therapist, support group, Grief Recovery Handbook partner — some “caring other” — can create lasting healing.

Attaching to a real live human being, eye-to-eye, is the only real way to heal.  This is how our brain gets created, as shown by the Still Face Experiment: https://www.youtube.com/watch?...amp;feature=youtu.be  What was damaged by a human connection can only be healed by a new human connection: face time, eye-to-eye contact.

 Here are some tools:

EMDR – Eye Motion Desensitization and Reprocessing – I use this to calm short-term disturbing thoughts.  Extremely helpful for PTSD, but won’t cure developmental trauma; check the blog, above.

Tapping, aka Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT) – I use it every day, it’s incredibly helpful to me; takes a few tries to learn.  Don’t tap alone if you have extreme trauma.  Click “where to tap” diagram top left above for details.

Neurofeedback: Healing the Fear-Driven Brain – I've been doing Neurofeedback for 9 months as of June 2016 with a practitioner who is also a 20-year veteran attachment therapist. My results are a wonderful new sense of calm. I can't recommend it more highly and it's even covered by my insurance for a small copay. Dr. Bessel van der Kolk also recommends a home-use neurofeedback program “HeartMath emWave-2″ for PC or smart phone.  I haven’t tried it.  But commenters on my “Neurofeedback” blog above say it works. EmWave: http://store.heartmath.org/emWave2/emWave2-handheld

Yoga: Here is Dr. Bessel van der Kolk’s 2009 interview on Yoga & PTSD.  Yoga means “union with God,” and has many forms including sitting to meditate.  Hatha Yoga is the form we know as yoga poses.  It teaches us how to inhabit our bodies here, right now; that’s why it’s been used for thousands of years.

How to Meditate–Really! Dr. Tara Brach, “Basic Elements of Meditation Practice,” Pt 1 (2/11/2015): “The first class examines our attitude towards practice and gives guidance on posture, establishing an anchor for attention, and learning to concentrate and collect the mind – ‘coming back.’ / ”  [https://www.youtube.com/watch?...mp;feature=autoshare]      “Basic Elements of Meditation Practice,” Pt 2 (2/18/2015) “The second class focuses on the practice of mindfulness – ‘being here,’ and the component qualities of clear recognition and an allowing non-judgmental presence.” https://www.youtube.com/watch?...mp;feature=autoshare

Hi Kathy, don't know if I can post this here but will. Let me know if I need to go elsewhere.

I have been excited for some time to do neurofeedback.  Had my first session today x 2 (i did a second).  It started with a symptom checklist.   I had lots of symptoms checked.  The protocol chosen was initially to calm my right amygdala but because it looked like so many waves were out of wack, did something called non-linear on T3 and T4 (right and left temporal) to get the brain hemispheres in synch.   First session 7 minutes..... It was interesting..  Looking at a screen with fractal patterns and auditory inputs.  After the first 7 minutes... I fell asleep for 2 hours. For me that is amazing because I don't take naps and don't sleep well.... I feel relatively calm and just completed a second for 14 minutes. I am now pretty tired.

I don't know how this is going to go, but I think if it is okay with you Kathy, I will just chronicle it here for now.  I have a strong feeling this process is going to get rid of my low self esteem, my rough edges and though I am really tired, I think this is going to really make some good changes. It already did something as I cannot see how normally looking at a computer screen would make me want to take a nap.  I hope it is okay if I put this here. If not let me know. Tina.

Thanks Tina!

I was just quoting Dr. van der Kolk, as mentioned, I had no experience at all...

But it's fantastic to hear it direct from a user like you!  Thank you!

Let us know how BrainPaint works out for you....

Kathy

Hi Kathy just wanted to let you know em wave II is a hand held w/ear clip sensor that does biofeedback... Not neurofeedback.. There is a whole heart math sight and you are supposed to imagine breathing through your heart and positive images w/your diaphragm. I have emwave, I really don't like it only b cause when I am breathing, I dont like holding it for the added feed back I am just fine with the smaller device that plugs in my iPhone but really any breath timer app for Apple or android would Likely work well. I start home neurofeedback tomorrow....EEG sensors on the head.... I will let ya know how that goes.. Heart math is good and fairly inexpensive but reading the heart math book (for 10 $) and getting a breath pacer app for phone iPad etc is probably as good.

I really appreciate your stressing that these techniques are for panic interventions when one get's triggered and not for long-term healing. Another resource I'm using is Brain-Tek. While the therapeutic version is done in a therapist's office, the Mobile Solutions are available and many of my clients use them with great success. You can visit www.BrainTekInstitute.com or access the Mobile Solutions at http://www.eagleslandingchrist...ling.com/page30.html . Love it! Really helpful for my anxiety when I get triggered.

Hi Cissy

You are so welcome! Did you write a report on your Boston ACE Study press conference?  If I missed it, please send URL; if not we'd all love to see it....

By the way, having tears - floods of 'em - while looking another human right in the eye, is THE fastest way I've found to heal my traumatized brain stem. I had to force myself, it was SO humiliating, I hated doing it ...for the first six months. But once I got the hang of it, one day I exclaimed, "Wow: People - The Magic Bandaid!"  Because I felt that much relief.

But we can't buy it for home use so I didn't list it here.

“This is why I tell people that God put tear ducts in our eyes,” says therapist Dr. John Townsend.  “Grief is a relational experience, and your pain has to be seen eye to eye with another person. Someone should be looking at us when we are crying, and we should be looking at him or her. Then we know that we are not alone, and that our tears are seen and heard.”

Kathy,

What a fabulous round up of resources and tips! I agree that healing WITH others is also crucial and when I want to do that in the privacy of alone, I do guided imagery. I can hear people talking and get the soothing audio and not be overstimulated. For me, this can sometimes allow tears I can't allow with people around. Though, I think that's the goal

This is great. Thanks for sharing!
Cissy
