Early childhood funding should address causes [McRecord.com]

With the state carrying a projected $1 billion budget surplus, the push is on to expand funding for early childhood education. Coming on the heels of last session’s approval of all-day kindergarten funding, the next step seems to be to fund pre-school for 4-year-olds.

We agree that more funds need to be targeted at the first years of life; too many children come to kindergarten unready or unable to learn on a par with their classmates. The goal is to increase the percentage who are ready to learn.

As President Obama said last month, children who get a high-quality early education are more likely to earn more over their lifetimes, more likely to finish school, less likely to go to prison, more likely to hold a job and more likely to start a stable family of their own.
