Philly.com columnist Kevin Riordan posted his impressions of Monday's trauma summit in Camden, N.J.
"Camden is a traumatized community," said Sandra L. Bloom, a physician who is an associate professor in Drexel University's School of Public Health and was the keynote presenter.
"What's important is that we now have a lot of science about the impact of trauma and adversity on children, families, and organizations and communities," she said..."Everybody can do their little bit. Even if it's just saying a kind word to somebody. Some ordinary thing. You never know with another person what's going to change the trajectory of their life. Ultimately they have to do it."
Reporter Kim Mulford at CourierOnline also covered the summit:
Dr. Jeffrey Brenner, founder of the Camden Coalition of Healthcare Providers, said his organization’s soon-to-be-published study of 20 high-cost, complex patients in the city showed the majority experienced severe instability or early-life trauma.
“Now, when I sit back and I think of my practice, I think, ‘Oh my God, how did I spend 10 years in Camden and never fully pulled it apart and understood it?’ ” he said.
“I need to go back to my own field and figure out how I nudge the health care delivery system in Camden to understand this issue, embrace this issue and rethink how we deliver care.”
