What Brexit can teach us about the psychology of fear [Vox.com]

Before the Brexit vote, economists were near-unified in voicing fears that the UK will suffer outside the EU. The list of consequences is long: The UK’s economy will lose out on a favorable trade union, businesses may relocate their European headquarters, and the whole episode could very well spark a recession for the country.

People who were counting on reason to win outwere left depressed and confused after the votes were tallied. What they missed was, fundamentally, an understanding of the psychology of voting. Given how unlikely it is that any one person’s vote will be the decisive one, voting decisions can be driven more by emotion than by rationality. And Brexit had a very powerful emotion on its side — fear of outsider and loss of identity.

People who think facts and figures should have swayed the Brexit vote aren’t considering the psychology of fear.

The Brexit vote is proof that when emotions battle reason in a voting booth, emotions can win. This fact stuns some pundits but it’s less surprising for neuroscientists like Mina Cikara.

The top 1% of wealth in the world have been making money off of our fear and addictions, and as our world becomes more fearful, and more addicted to drugs, sugar, processed foods, guns, pornography, etc. we are in a crisis.  Just look at the increase in family disputes, crime, mental health problems, and reactive behaviors fueled by anger and fear.  If we were to look at that from a judicial point of view, it should be considered a crime against humanity to profit off of things that are making people sick.  Where is the health and well being of our Nation being considered.  We need leadership that knows how to take charge, because if the fears and addictions go untreated on the global spectrum, we are in for a future that is controlled by them, and our health will continue to decline.  Bigger government is not the answer.  Strengthening our Communities, and standing against the things that are bad for the health of humanity should be our governments job.  Too bad the CDC can't step in to criminally charge the industries that are making people sick.  We can do our part by boycotting the things that make people sick.
