"But more important, a more sustainable solution, if we really care about our children is to work toward decreasing our current levels of violence. In 2002 the World Health Organization (WHO) issued a comprehensive report on violence and health, still easily accessible on their website....

"The WHO report offers helpful suggestions that focus on community factors for example such as improving street lighting, creating safe routes for children and youths on their way to and from school, and monitoring and removing environmental pollutants that may affect child development. The report also states that activities for young people in the areas of sports, drama, art and music are important. There is also the suggestion of a public education media campaign that raises public awareness about community-based violence is key...."
