VA: Progress made in San Diego [SanDiegoUnionTribune.com]

Veterans Affairs officials in San Diego said Monday they are seeing improvement on controversies that have dogged the federal agency, including long wait times for medical appointments, a backlog of disability claims — and even the appearance of national cemeteries, despite California’s historic drought.

But challenges remain at a time when the VA is under pressure from Congress, which has voted to let thousands of veterans seek care in the private sector on the public dime.

“Nationally, you continue to hear negative media stories about VA health care,” Jeff Gering, director of the VA’s San Diego medical system, said at a news conference in Mission Valley.

“While the national press attempts to typecast the problems as across the VA ... that’s certainly not the case,” he said.
