V.A.’s Treatment of Veterans’ Trauma [NYTimes.com]

To the Editor:

We read “After PTSD, More Trauma” (Sunday Review, Jan. 18), by David J. Morris, a former Marine infantry officer, with concern. The Department of Veterans Affairs has long recognized access to care as a top priority for improving veteran services. Secretary Robert A. McDonald has challenged the V.A. to refocus and re-energize these efforts.

An increasingly broad range of effective treatment options are now available to veterans, but we fear that Mr. Morris’s account will make some veterans reluctant to seek help for post-traumatic stress disorder.

I was pleased to see a reply letter to the NYTimes from Bessel van der Kolk, concerning this article. I thought one necessary item was missing from the discussion, and I had encountered what I felt was a relevant article entitled: "The Stigma of Psychological Problems in a Work Environment: Evidence From the Screening of Service Members Returning From Bosnia" by Thomas W. Britt (Journal of Applied Social Psychology, 2000, 30. 8pp. 1599-1618 [V.H. Winston & Son, Inc. All Rights reserved].
