The contributing factors seem to crescendo.
Often kids in the program began as victims of neglect. They are likely subject to physical violence or sexual abuse. Their young eyes are likely to witness domestic violence, substance abuse or both.
Maybe they had to fill in for a parent as an elementary student or teen.
With the ubiquity of the Internet, they were probably exposed to pornography. Porn stimulates the same pleasure center in the brain as gambling, smoking, drugs and alcohol, which can be addicting once triggered.
When the allure of porn alone started to fade, some turned to alcohol, marijuana and harder drugs, or masturbating to pornography until that too lost its appeal.
Then, raised in a maelstrom where nothing was in their control, they took advantage of a sibling, neighbor or friend sexually.
It helped them feel power.
