Twitter CEO, 'ashamed' at handling of trolls, vows to lead crackdown [Upstart.BizJournals.com]

costolosab1934adj-304xx4248-2832-4-0Twitter CEO Dick Costolo says the company is ready to take a stand against trolls, and he's personally leading the campaign to boot abusers off the social media platform.

San Francisco-based Twitter has come under fire for its platform's continued failure to eliminate trolling. In recent months, high-profile trolling cases have included severe harassment of Zelda Williams, the daughter of the late actor Robin Williams, following her father's suicide. The issue was back in the spotlight again recently when journalist Lindy West, a frequent victim of harassment on Twitter, interviewed one of her cruelest trolls on air on "This American Life."

That interview reportedly sparked intense internal discussion at Twitter, and now Costolo has stepped up to take personal responsibility for the company's handling of the phenomenon.

"We suck at dealing with abuse and trolls on the platform and we've sucked at it for years," Costolo wrote in an internal memo obtained by tech news website The Verge. "It's no secret and the rest of the world talks about it every day. We lose core user after core user by not addressing simple trolling issues that they face every day."
