Trauma Training (Virtual) for People Supporting Those with IDD - June 14-15th

Risking Connection, the landmark trauma training curriculum used since 2000 to train tens of thousand human service professions globally, has now been adapted for organizations and systems supporting people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD).

The Traumatic Stress Institute will be offering this freestanding, 2-day virtual training for the first time, June 14-15, 2022. A central part of TSI's Whole-System Change Model to TIC, the Risking Connection IDD model can be adopted by IDD organizations and systems as a core professional development offering for staff, advocates, and volunteers.

If you think foundational training about trauma may be a good fit for your IDD organization and you want to check it out, register now to hold your spot.

Why Risking Connection Trauma Training for Those Supporting People with IDD?

The statistics about trauma prevalence in people with IDD are harrowing. Yet, few organizations train their staff, advocates, or families about trauma.

Risking Connection IDD provides a framework for understanding the intense (and complex) behavioral needs of people with IDD, so many of whom have histories of physical, sexual, and emotional abuse, separations from loved ones, bullying, witnessing violence, and other adversities. It helps staff move away from punitive responses that can re-traumatize people to ones that are compassionate, recognize the person is doing the best they can in the moment, and promote healing.

Having been hurt and betrayed in relationships, traumatized people need to risk forming connections with caring support people that are different (enough) from harmful past relationships. They need relationships that are RICH ā€“ Respectful, Informative, Connected, and Hopeful.

Risking Connection is unique in that it stresses that taking care of BOTH the person being supported and support people are critical. So, it focuses on the impact of compassion fatigue on the support person and the essential need for self-care. This is especially important as IDD organizations face unprecedented turnover.

Each day of this 2-Day participatory training includes lively presentations, small and large group discussions, videos, and application exercises.
