Trauma-informed care holds promise for children [MySanAntonio.com]

Almost daily it appears that our sense of safety is rocked by the news of another traumatic event, whether it is a mass shooting, an act of violence or a natural disaster that results in loss of life and suffering.

Since 9/11, as a nation we have become increasingly aware of the incidence of trauma. The first national study of the prevalence of trauma in the lives of the general population of the United States revealed that 61 percent of men and 51 percent of women report experiencing at least one trauma in their lifetime.

Research reveals that more than 25 percent of children nationally experience a traumatic event before the age of 16, and many suffer repeated trauma. In Texas, that amounts to approximately 1.8 million children who have or will be impacted by trauma.
