Trauma Informed Care & Professionalism Workgroup - Oregon

"Presenting problem:

Our child welfare court system can be rote. We are constantly mindful of time constraints, staff and other resource limitations, and legal requirements but not always aware of how our interactions affect others involved in a case. No matter our role, demeanor, attitude, choice of language, and other practices in and out of the courtroom can negatively impact not just case outcomes but the personal esteem of litigants and respect for the system.

Subcommittee tasks:

Utilize existing TIC trainers and training to train Judges, attorneys, DHS workers and staff, CASAs and Partners on:

·        Trauma awareness

·        Trauma informed legal and child welfare practice

·        Trauma informed communication, including person-centered language

Create peer and/or outside feedback tools to help us gain knowledge and understanding about our own behavior that is perceived differently that intended..

·        Establish safe feedback loops

·        Opportunities for debrief and supervision

·        Create expectation of improved TIC, demeanor and professionalism from our leaders (Waller, McKnight, Burns, Hennessey, etc)..."
