Giving kids a healthy and happy childhood can improve their health and well-being for the rest of their lives.

That’s according to a report released this week by the Trust for America’s Health, which outlines 40 ways to reduce toxic stress and adverse childhood experiences.

More than half of all children experience at least one adverse childhood experience, such as physical abuse, sexual abuse, poverty and parent divorce or separation. Living with prolonged stress can increase a child’s risk for problems later in life, including high blood pressure, diabetes, heart disease, stroke, cognitive and developmental disorders, depression, anxiety and other problems.
