Therapists bring energy to mental health scene [DarianTimes.com]

Two of the panelists at last year’s Straight Talk events, sponsored by The Depot teen center and the Darien Police Department, were mental health therapists Robert DiRoma, Jr and Roody Joseph. The pair opened a practice in Darien, the Counseling Center for Discovery and Change, last May. The practice is a response to a need they both saw for services in the community. They don’t keep conventional office hours and are instead evenings Tuesday through Thursday and on Saturdays. “People’s mental health issues don’t end at 5 or 6 o’clock, Monday – Friday,” says Joseph.

DiRoma and Joseph are both 29 years old, and they grew up in Stamford. Janice Marzano, program director at The Depot, has known DiRoma since he was a teenager with blue hair and a band that played at teen center. “He’s different, and that’s why the kids are drawn to him,” says Marzano. “He’s not your typical therapist. He’s got [tattoo] sleeves and piercings. And he relates to the kids.”
