The Unexpected Loss Amid 'Amy Tan: Unintended Memoir' Premiere At Sundance [forbes.com]

The unintended tragedy behind today’s Sundance Film Festival premiere of Amy Tan: Unintended Memoir is that its director, James “Jamie” Redford, died less than four months before the documentary appeared at the celebrated indie showcase founded by Redford’s father.

Cancer killed Redford in mid-October, just as the film neared final form and had gotten final sign-off from Tan, said the film’s editor, Jeff Boyette, who worked closely with Redford to shape the film. Seeing the premiere without Redford, even in the virtualized setting of this year’s festival, will be difficult.

“Bittersweet is a very good way to put it,” said Boyette. “I know he would be extremely proud of how it ended up, and would want to be at Sundance. It’s devastating to think he won't be there, won't be able to hug and handshake.”
