The Time is Now for Building Community Resilience & Healing[Moving Health Care Upstream]

I highly recommend this post written by Wendy Ellis, DrPH that introduces a short (8:53 minutes) movie about the Building Community Resilience (BCR) movement and puts it in the context of current themes, including racism, inequity and other difficult issues we all find difficult to talk about. Dr. Ellis is the lead investigator for the Building Community Resilience workgroup and Manager of Child Health Policy in Nemours’ Office of Child Health Policy and Advocacy. At the end of July, she is leaving Nemours and is joining the research staff at George Washington University (GWU) where she will continue the BCR work. She recently served as the moderator for a congressional briefing, sponsored by Senator Heidi Heitkamp (D-ND) and the Campaign for Trauma-Informed Policy and Practice.
Events in recent weeks highlight the crippling effects of poverty, racism, disenfranchisement, and erosion of social capital in our communities. These conditions combined with violent images captured, shared and re-shared in social media, have the dual impact of re-traumatizing effected communities and igniting a powder keg of anger and frustration that transcends race and class. These complex traumas have wide reaching effects that can be felt well beyond the porous confines of a single household, neighborhood, or zip code. Yet these environments often define a child’s life experience with disastrous impact on health and wellbeing.
