The Relentless School Nurse: ... And Social Justice For All

   When we:

Pledge Allegiance

To the Flag

Of the United States of America

And to the Republic

For which it stands.

One Nation, under God.

Indivisible with Liberty…

And (Social) Justice for All

But is it really Justice for all? What is the counter-narrative around this most crucial question? Adding Social to Justice changes the narrative. What is social justice? Where is it hiding? Why are so many blind to the issue or pretend that it does not impact them; it is about “others” who are less fortunate. That could not be furthest from the truth because there is a ripple effect. If we are to really care about our children, then we must care for ALL of our children. We cannot pick and choose which children deserve the best of our care. They all do! Human dignity includes the worthiness of every child. That cannot happen without social justice for all, including parents.

Health is intrinsically linked to social justice, a further expansion of the comprehensive definition of health as a social construct. The idea of social well-being must be included in this conversation. The World Health Organization’s definition of health states:  “Health is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.”

The Dean of Boston University’s School of Public Health, Dr. Sondro Galea wrote:  “A social justice approach to population health challenges us to deal with these underlying concerns, to recognize that racismsocioeconomic inequalitygender discrimination, and hate, to name a few, have negative consequences for health, and that we simply cannot improve the health of populations without tackling these foundational causes, a point made repeatedly and eloquently in a large body of public health literature.” – retrieved from Social Justice, Public Health

“Let your outrage fuel your action” is only one of the many lessons learned at the 2018 ACEs Conference. The moment I heard that directive, I began to understand how I sustain the momentum that has driven me to this point of action. It is my outrage! Every day, breaking news continues to fuel that outrage, so for the time being, my tank is full.

This #Tweet captures so many of today’s realities in one message:

Perhaps the greatest source of social injustice and inequality in our world is the variability in the quality of parenting.  Something as important as parenting shouldn’t be left to chance.  What I mean is…some children will be born to loving parents who engage in parenting behaviors and practices generally recognized as supporting their healthy development.  Other children will be born to parents who engage in unsupportive/harmful/abusive parenting.  Is this fair?  Shouldn’t every child be raised by great parents?  This is why I started Advancing Parenting.  We are pioneering a new kind of parenting education…one that reaches everyone, everywhere, all the time.  It is our hope that this kind of proactive, participatory, passive, public parenting education will elevate and level the parenting playing field.  Visit advancingparenting.org to read about what we do, why we do it, and our big plans for the future.
