The New Importance of Children in America [Lucile Packard Foundation for Children's Health]

With massive demographic shifts taking place, the way we raise, educate, and care for all children has reached a new level of importance.  Ensuring children’s health and well-being in the U.S. is critical to the nation’s economic and political future, according to The New Importance of Children, a report co-funded by the Lucile Packard Foundation for Children’s Health and Children’s Hospital Association. Declining birthrates mean that each child is proportionately more important to society than ever before. In addition to our moral obligation as a country to care for children, our future economy and standard of living demand that children become our highest priority.

The Baby Boomer generation is aging and retiring at the same time that birth rates are declining, altering the social and economic landscape. This disproportion makes each child—regardless of gender, ethnicity, geographic residence or economic background— increasingly important to our future. As advocates, we need to champion the priority of children to those who have the power to promote change.
