The Myth of Mental Illness

Very nice blog post from a survivor.

"Having lived with manic-depressive illness for over sixty years and having studied the illness from the standpoint of social behavior, episodes, spikes in mania, triggers, onsets of trauma, curves of feeling responsible and like a failure I know that it is not mental illness that is responsible for heinous acts of violence. There are individuals who for whatever reason have mental health breakdowns equivalent to suicidal ideation, and this is true for me, who lose all perspective and sense about life, often they are isolated and completely sever their relationships to care givers....

"...We must provide care for people who are suffering from trauma equivalent to holding them and listening when a loved one dies. We have to be ready to reach out to people who are suffering as a compassionate angel not as a guard in a prison...."

"We have to reach back to the earliest times of adverse childhood experience  (ACE) reach in and learn to embrace the pain and loss.  We have to provide comfort stations and care giving that most of all is compassionate and not punitive...."
