The Link Between Depression and Substance Abuse

When it comes to understanding drug abuse, it is important to realize that many people who regularly abuse drugs or are addicted to substances are also diagnosed with mental health disorders, and vice versa. This is a well-documented phenomenon that has been tracked since the 1980s.

In order to better understand treatment methods for those who are dealing with either or both of these issues, it is important to know how these two issues interact with one another and how one can exacerbate the other.

Depression and Substance Abuse

All too often, people who are suffering from depression can turn to substances to try and solve their problems and symptoms. Or, vice versa, someone with a substance abuse problem may sink into a depression because of their harmful habits.

Unfortunately, this issue is one that becomes a cyclical problem with one issue playing off of the other. Because of this, it can be incredibly difficult to quit using or to overcome depression as they often play off of each other and interfere with one another.

Treatment for Comorbidity

When it comes to treating these problems, it is best to treat them concurrently and not separately. If these problems are not solved at the same time, people who are dealing with these issues can be at risk of continuing problems. Because substance abuse and depression play off of each other and can lead to a cyclical problem.

With this said, if you are looking for national or local treatment centers, like rehabs in Indiana, you should ensure that the institution will engage in dual diagnosis treatment and offer an individualized and evidence-based care program to help patients overcome their respective substance abuse disorders and mental health impediments.

These two problems can be treated at the same time in a number of ways including both medication and behavioral therapies. While the specific treatment methods will depend entirely on a patient’s specific situation, there are effective treatment opportunities available to those who are looking to get the help that they need.
