"All of us working with refugee populations are mindful that the majority, if not all, of our clients have experienced major trauma in their lives and it continues to affect them on a daily basis. This workshop gave us many ideas on how to effectively work with our clients when the effects of trauma surface in our office. A main take-away from the day was that there are 3 universal triggers of trauma:
- Loss of control
- Power differential between staff and clients
- Loss of predictability...
"We as a staff constantly do in-office role plays and trainings as to how to effectively work with our clients, making sure they feel that they have a voice, are validated and are heard by us. It is always a work in progress, but with the addition of some of the above items, we can come closer to our goal of helping diminish the effects of trauma in our new Americans."
