The Immigrant Experience In Our Local Communities

In our diverse country, immigration (past or recent) is an almost universal experience. This event featured personal stories from people who have recently arrived in the United States. They shared the challenges they left behind, the difficulties experienced on their journey, and their experiences raising a family in a new culture. The focus was on Spanish-speaking newcomers and highlighted the positive impact of Hispanics in our community. Leaders from community agencies also discussed how we can make our community more welcoming. This forum was delivered twice, once in English and a week later in Spanish.

Nearly 75 people tuned in through Zoom & Facebook LIVE for our first powerful conversation about immigrant experiences in our local community. Not only did we hear firsthand some of the physical, emotional, and mental barriers overcome by our resounding guest panelists, but an audience member in attendance added another story of resilience and a true testament to the positive impact of Hispanics in our community. Arnoldo Arrate, a Cuban immigrant who came to the United States 15 years ago, sought assistance from Ivis Triana from Lutheran Services of Florida nearly 10 yrs ago. He has now attained his law degree, passed the bar exam, and opened his own law firm offering services to the community to help other immigrants like himself and his family. Viewers as far as Canada also joined and added to the celebration of hard work Geri Chaffee, founder of Dreamers Academy, and the community of Sarasota has put into opening a dual-language charter school, a first of its kind in the area. View the full recording of both the English & Spanish versions and access resources discussed throughout the presentation below.
