The Covington Curriculum Conference: The Magic of Stephanie Covington Lingers

June 7-9, 2023 @ Royal Sonesta Hotel, Minneapolis, MN

Learn from a beloved international expert and understand why this in-person experience is not to be missed.

Dr. Stephanie Covington will present on four occasions throughout this multi-day conference, delivering the opening and closing plenary sessions and offering two optional evening events, each discussing books from early in her career to the current day. She is actively engaged throughout, stopping into all core curriculum training sessions, and is often spotted in the hallways, talking intimately with an attendee, or taking selfies with a group.

The curriculum and trainers, networking, collaboration, 19 CEUs? Together, they are reasons enough to register now for this conference. If asked, “What is the most important reason someone should attend this conference?”, I would not pause before answering:

“You do not want to miss an opportunity
to share space with Stephanie Covington.”

A colleague explains it best, "Experiencing Dr. Covington in person is a lifelong memory for me. I was given her curriculum as an inmate in prison and for the first time, I began to truly understand trauma and recovery. When meeting her in person at her conference years after incarceration, it felt as if she were speaking right to me. I felt heard, valued, and inspired to create change. It was a full circle moment for my healing journey, and I’ve kept a picture of her and I to look at when I’m struggling. It’s a reminder of where I’ve been, where I am now, and where I hope to be.

covingtonconferencelogo-final.200x0-isRewind: The Impact and Influence of an Experience

In 1987, Dr. Covington was advocating for gender-responsive programming for women at a rare conference on addiction that centered women’s issues. Admittedly naïve about the criminal justice system, she still recognized a gap as she listened to women from a local prison speak. A persistent request to stay inside this facility for a few days was granted a year later. As she shared with her roommates there, she “had done work for women’s recovery programming but had never worked with women in prison; and because I knew nothing about it, I felt I needed to come inside.”

Dr. Covington realized that she wanted to work with women in prison, and those few days have profoundly influenced her life and impacted countless others in the decades since. Her curricula are embedded in criminal justice settings across the world, for women, men, and youth. She deeply understands that many of us are spared the experience based on situation, timing, and privilege and wants the tools of recovery and restoration to be available to all.

Her soon to be published book, Hidden Healers: The Unexpected Ways Women Survive Prison by Helping Each Other, is based on over twenty interviews with formerly incarcerated women. The highlight of one of the intimate evening discussions, it promises to be enchanting.
