Supporting the parents of children affected by trauma

Many different therapies are available for those who experience childhood trauma, but University of Saskatchewan psychology professor Jorden Cummings is working towards developing services focusing on the parents and strengthening the entire family.

“There’s no specific therapy for the parents,” Cummings said. “And sometimes parents have a lot of their own negative experiences that they are going through after the child has experienced trauma.

Thanks for posting this, Loren. I'm at a conference (Keeping Kids in School and Out of Court), where a panel of people from Santa Cruz who worked with foster kids to support their education made the point that "parenting the parents" was an integral part of the program, because they're often in crisis and need help, too. And often the best way to help a child is to also help the parent.

This has also come up in the child welfare agencies that are becoming trauma-informed.

Your are very welcome ... I have been looking into this a lot because how can a traumatized parent deal with the issues and pressures ... I often wondered why so many parents of people in prison walk away ... because they have no support and can not take the trauma that they are subjected to by that traumatic environment !!

Loren, thank you so much for sharing this!  I would be one of the very parents this article talks about.  I have PTSD from having raised a foster-adopted, traumatized daughter.
