Supporting Our Heroes: Montgomery County Coalition for the Homeless Joins with the Department of Veterans Affairs

"In honor of Veterans Day, Montgomery County Coalition for the Homeless (MCCH) is humbled to announce we’ve been selected by the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) to serve those who served our county with dignity and honor. The VA recently awarded MCCH new funding to provide low-barrier Safe Havens emergency housing for homeless Veterans with severe and persistent mental illness or co-occurring substance disorders. This group is oftentimes the most visible in our region, yet the hardest to reach, which is why the Department of Veterans Affairs is partnering with MCCH. MCCH has operated Safe Havens for over 20 years and has a high success rate of placing this population into permanent supportive housing. MCCH is proud to be able to serve Veterans from our region.
"MCCH has secured funding for this critical program for one year, with additional renewal funding for up to five years. The Veterans Safe Haven program will allow MCCH to work closely with the Department of Veterans Affairs for referrals and access into the Safe Havens. Safe Havens fits a distinct need in our local community by providing truly harm-reduction, trauma-informed, low-demand housing and intensive supportive services for severely mentally ill
homeless Veterans who served our Nation. MCCH has succeeded with operating Safe Havens for other vulnerable homeless populations by providing a structured and safe living environment that enables clients to move at their own pace and become engaged in treatment, and develop skills with the ultimate goal of moving into permanent supportive housing...."
