"Spanking may leave a lasting impact on children, well past their initial punishment.
"Children who were spanked often early in life by their mothers were more likely to be aggressive later in childhood compared to kids who weren't spanked at all, a study published in Pediatrics on Oct. 21 concluded. Thanks for that great info, Robbyn! Elder and animal abuse are the other forms of domestic violence that are considered a personal choice. Well, maybe elder abuse not so much; but it does exist. And other-animals (we are animals, too) get a horrific lot as pets.

Great comments as usual, Brenda!

Agreed!  As a parent, I don't think I would EVER feel comfortable or "right" hitting my children.  I rather think of it as a form of bullying (bigger person HITTING a child? Not acceptable!).

The research seems to be just flooding in with the same consistent message that spanking causes developmental delays into the future.  I was thinking about how physical child abuse occurs at twice the rate of spousal abuse according to the ACE, and is the most frequently reported, not to mention it has a phenomenal cluster value of 84%.  And yet, we still send the message that spanking is a personal choice.  What other form of domestic violence is a personal choice?
