On the same day news broke that former Subway sandwich spokesman Jared Fogle plans to plead guilty to child pornography and sex-with-minors charges, an Indiana commission focusing on children’s issues heard results of a long-awaited report that looks at adolescent sexual assault in the Hoosier state.

The report, “An Investigation into Adolescent Sexual Assault Underreporting in Indiana,” was made public Wednesday during a meeting of the Commission on Improving the Status of Children.

“It confirms a lot of what we thought we knew and raises a lot of questions about things we still need to know,” said State Rep. Christina Hale, D-Indianapolis, who advocated for the study, which was later required by law.

“Adolescent sexual violence is far too common in the state of Indiana,” the report begins. “The best available data indicate that Indiana has the second highest rate of forced sexual intercourse among high school females in the nation, and overall, more than 1 in 6 have been a victim of sexual assault by the time they are 18 years old.”
