School Mental Health Bill Clears Senate [indianapublicmedia.org]

A bill to provide mental health care for Indiana students narrowly passed the Senate this week.  The legislation was written in response to school safety.

Bill author, Sen. Michael Crider (R-Greenfield), says the creation of an integrated mental health system is a key step in preventing school violence.

"Every recent incident in Indiana that I’m aware of has not been a total surprise," says Crider. "Someone knew that student was having issues."

1- Will this bill address school climate (specifically including workplace bullying in education)?  Will school districts be required to establish enforceable anti-workplace bullying policies as part of this bill?

2- Will this bill recognize how class size reduction, adequate and safe/healthy classroom facilities, adequate teaching materials, recognition and implementation of “best teaching practices” (vs high stakes testing,), etc., by themselves promote a positive mental health? Will school districts be required to complete a self-assessment to identify which school-owned concerns CONTRIBUTE TO OR DETRACT FROM mental wellness? For teaching a course on mental health from a dank, cold classroom with materials/equipment from the 1970’s... is a cruel oxymoron.

Until any proposed mental health bill recognizes the “institutional betrayal” of ... arming teachers to carry concealed weapons rather than restricting gun access, cutting school funds so severely that teachers teach from kids learn in dangerously unhealthy classrooms... there are so many education issues we see as CAUSING this decline in mental health... WHEN WILL THIS TEACHER VOICE BE HEARD?

And who, among trauma informed school proponents, is actively working with teachers on this?
