SAMHSA Releases Treatment Improvement Protocol (TIP) 57 “Trauma-Informed Care in Behavioral Health Services.”

SAMHSA (Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration) has released Treatment Improvement Protocol (TIP) 57 “Trauma-Informed Care in Behavioral Health Services.” The document (342 pages) is downloadable along with the 279-page literature review. According to SAMHSA “Each TIP involves the development of topic-specific best practice guidelines for the prevention and treatment of substance use and mental disorders.”

The report says that the two influential studies that set the stage for the development of trauma-informed care are the ACE study and Women, Co-Occurring Disorders and Violence Study (SAMHSA, 2007). According to SAMHSA, the report “Assists behavioral health professionals in understanding the impact and consequences for those who experience trauma. Discusses patient assessment, treatment planning strategies that support recovery, and building a trauma-informed care workforce.” It includes a chapter on screening and assessment and suggests that counselors in certain instances use the ACE study score calculator (acestudy.org/ace_score).
