Refugee trauma makes mental health support important - Canada

"The Outreach, Assessment and Specialized Intervention Services (OASIS) Program specializes in providing trauma treatment and supports for immigrant and refugee children, youth, and their families. Once operated jointly with SISO, OASIS has been delivered by the multidisciplinary team at the Community Child Abuse Council for the past three years and is the only local program of its kind.                        

"We work closely with partners in settlement services, schools, health care, and other community organizations to identify children whose traumatic experiences have left them with symptoms that can range from nightmares and sleeplessness to more severe attachment disorders. We have launched a pilot project that will see one of our clinicians working from the on-site health clinic at Sir John A. Macdonald Secondary School and expanding to other sites in the near future...."
