Reducing youth violence requires community effort [Tennessean.com]

I doubt there are more passionate people around than those who work with youth in our community: teachers, coaches, nonprofit workers and volunteers. It could be that we know they have time to live in abundance through good choices, having positive role models and having access to resources along the way. We can feel hopeful for our future through helping to shape lives one by one.

It is with great interest that I have read many recent articles relating to our youth, among them on Gov. Bill Haslam's work to build awareness of ACEs (adverse childhood experiences), the fabulous work our area nonprofits are doing (“Adults play part in youth violence problem,” by STARS CEO Roger Dinwiddie) and Mayor Megan Barry’s efforts at programs that can help alleviate the youth violence problem in our city.

I agree with the comments in this article.  However, we cannot overlook parents and families of the youth are many times overlooked as protective factors for their children.  It is often assumed that the parents are always the problem.  In many instances helping parents and families help the youth in their community can also be effective and much more long lasting than temporary intervention by others.
