Putting a TINSOC in every politician's mouth

Susan Hess receiving the LA City DV Taskforce Award

On October 9, 2013, our very own Susan Hess, Director of Domestic Violence Programming at Echo Parenting & Education, received an award from the Los Angeles City Domestic Violence Taskforce for her work in bringing the TINSOC collaborative together.

TINSOC is the acronym for Trauma Informed Nonviolent Standards of Care. In 2012, Echo Parenting & Education began to assemble a collaborative of domestic violence shelters and other agencies that serve survivors of intimate partner violence to develop these standards which can serve as guidelines for any service agency wishing to become more trauma-informed and to support nonviolent child raising. (For a history of the project, please see earlier blog: "Parenting, trauma informed care, and... ankle monitors?")

Six LA City elected officials and the Mayor attended the press event to mark Domestic Violence Awareness Month, during which Ms. Hess was presented with her award. (In the photo above you can see City Council members Mike Bonin, Paul Krekorkian and Bob Blumenfeld. Also present were City Council member Joe Buscaino and Mitch O'Farrell, the Mayor Eric Garcetti and City Attorney, Mike Feuer.) At this event, and at the presentation later in council chambers, TINSOC was in everyone's mouth. We are so excited to be gaining this kind of recognition for our work, believing that only when trauma-informed and nonviolent child raising practices become institutionalized will there be real systems change.

The Echo Parenting & Education TINSOC Team

If you would like to participate in crafting the next version of the standards (we received so much great input after people started viewing the first draft we've decided to keep on refining the document) or simply want to know more, please join us for an event on Oct 30, 2013 at the Museum of Tolerance (10 a.m. to 12 noon). Please RSVP to Glenda at glinares@echoparenting.org.

We have a fab team, you're right, but I should also mention that we have done this as a collaborative, with extensive involvement from Elizabeth Eastlund at Rainbow Services, and Katie Tyler at Angel Step Inn (both DV shelters), advice from Gabriella Grant (California Center of Excellence for Trauma Informed Care) and Margaret Hobart (Washington State DV Coalition) and with participation from many other agencies. Currently, our Steering Committee consists of Eve Sheedy from the LA City's Attorney's office, Adriana Molina from Children's Institute Inc., Elizabeth Eastlund, Kaile Schilling from the Violence Prevention Coalition and Echo. Any more people added to the collaborative and our acknowledgements may begin to rival Oscar acceptance speeches!

The EPE team (left to right) is Kim Pesenti (communications), Azucena Ortiz (Program Manager, community programs), the award-winning Susie Hess, Jessica Le Tarte (intern), Glenda Linares (Program Manager, professional trainings) and yes, the little head popping up behind is me, Louise Godbold, Co-Interim Executive Director. Missing from the photograph are my counterpart (Diana Ayala, Co-Interim ED) and our founder, Ruth Beaglehole.
