Promising developments and a new commitment to gun safety in the US (PreventionInstitute.org)

Over recent weeks, we’ve seen a youth-led movement challenge our nation’s grim acceptance of this unacceptable status quo. This movement builds on the momentum of social movements that have been addressing violence in various forms across the country. From the March for Our Lives, which drew approximately 1.2 million people to over 450 marches across the US, to consumer boycotts of companies partnering with the National Rifle Association, to announcements like Bank of America’s decision to no longer lend money to manufacturers of assault weapons and Kaiser Permanente’s pledge to invest $2 million in gun violence research, to the lifting of a 22-year ban on gun violence research at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. We are witnessing the beginning of a shift in norms – from accepting gun violence as inevitable to insisting that young people have a right to be safe in their schools and communities.

In support of this movement and renewed calls for action to address gun violence, we’ve released an updated list of recommendations to prevent multiple forms of gun violence.

Summary of recommendations

Gun safety: reduce the imminent risk of lethality through sensible gun laws and a culture of safety.

Underlying contributors to gun violence: systematically reduce risks and increase resilience in individuals, families, and communities
5. Trauma, connection, and services: Expand access to high quality, culturally competent, coordinated, social, emotional, and mental health supports and address the impact of trauma.

Prevention Infrastructure: ensure effectiveness and sustainability of efforts

New frontiers: continue to learn, innovate, and increase impact through research and practice
8. Community healing: Prevent community trauma.
9. Mental health and wellbeing: Invest in communities to promote resilience and mental health and wellbeing.
