There was a sense of urgency at the workshop given by Dr. Matt Sanders at the Ukiah Conference Center on March 12.
The workshop focused on “Triple P,” the Positive Parenting Program pioneered by Sanders and his fellow researchers at the University of Queensland in Brisbane, Australia.
According to Sanders, a professor of Clinical Psychology, the method of Triple P is to provide parents and parents-to-be with the best child-rearing techniques available, and to give them confidence in their ability to use those techniques.
The overall goal of Triple P, said Sanders, is to reduce the number of adverse childhood experiences – called “ACEs” by the public health sector – in a given community. Skillful parenting leads to fewer adverse childhood experiences, which in turn leads to better health and economic outcomes for both the children and the community itself.
