Program addresses childhood trauma in adults [Record-Eagle.com]

The CDC reports nearly two-thirds of adults have suffered childhood trauma. Cathy Fialon and Shenandoah Chefalo both know firsthand the impacts that trauma can have.

Fialon first saw it working in the family division of the 13th Circuit Court and again working as a lawyer for youths impacted by trauma. Chefalo saw it working as an office administrator in criminal defense law.

A twist of fate, and a childhood trauma webinar, brought the two together to bond over their frustration at the lack of training services to address such trauma in the workplace.

"Places would attend a 60-minute webinar and call themselves trauma informed," Chefalo said. "They’d get an understanding of how it affects people, but they didn't change anything."

The two recently launched Good Harbor Institute, a long-term trauma care training program for businesses and organizations, to offer an alternative to the typical hourlong webinars. The yearlong program is designed to offer sustainable changes in how businesses and organizations address trauma.
