Profile: Valerie Krist, Designer, ACEs Connection

We think everyone who’s joined ACEsConnection has a story to tell. So, we’ll be contacting many of you to ask you a few questions about what inspired you to work on ACEs. We ACEs Connection Network team members will go first, partly because if we want you to participate, we should, too.

What personal or professional moment or event in your life inspired you to work on ACEs?

My own experiences with childhood trauma and Jane's persuasiveness to work on this project with her (it did not take much, I would work on any job with Jane!) are really what made me interested in being involved. Also, I have three small children, and ACEs Connection provides resources to help me become more knowledgeable about how to make their lives healthier and safer.

How do you hope to contribute to and gain from ACEs Connection?

As a designer, I hope to make the website easy to navigate, make the information easy to access and dynamic, and highlight your stories. I would like to help you to expand your communities and create your own group identities.

How have you used ACEs in your work or life? Has it changed what you do?

There is no way I could work on this website and not be affected by the stories here. ACEs Connection has given me a new perspective and a greater sense of empathy in my interactions with the people in my life. When there is a conflict or seemingly negative behavior, I try to get past my initial reaction and take a step back. I try to first look at the reasons why this person is reacting or behaving they way they are, instead of the actual behavior.  My experiences with ACEs Connection has definitely changed the way I work with the students at my children's school when I volunteer.

Basically, what do you do, and what does your organization do?

I work with the rest of the team updating the website, design the way the content looks and trying to find new ways to visually explain our stories for the web. I also send out weekly newsletters and daily digest emails.
