A global study of adolescents from low-income neighborhoods revealed that teenagers from Baltimore, a city located just 40 miles from the US capital, are faring worse than their counterparts in Nigeria.

Many people tend to associate child poverty with desperate scenes out of Africa or India. But according to a recent WAVE study, an international survey that examined the living conditions of 15-19 year olds in poor areas in Baltimore, Shanghai, Johannesburg, New Delhi and Ibadan (third largest city in Nigeria), the problem is much closer to home than many people realize.

Thanks Alicia for the article. I am really not surprised. I think many who have not experienced this extreme deprivation cannot understand how bad this is for mental health and in the US we have very rich people and those who don't seem to matter to us.  It really makes me sad.  I know when I was growing up in a rural area, I used to tell myself that "at least I am not poor in the inner city".  There were kids shot all the time and stuff and I thought, it is bad enough here. I could not imagine my rage as a jaguar goes by, likely not gonna happen too often unless the person is lost and the fact that I have no food, my little brother has no  food, our school is a mess with guns, gangs and drugs and little education.  I thought I would be dead of a drug overdose by now and would surely have become a drug addict.  I wish America would understand that one only needs so much to survive. I cannot understand how folks can walk through life in massive excess and not be able to see that kids here are starving, being shot and beaten and we are worse than a third world country. Dr. Garbarino in his book "Listening to killers", has a huge section on the War Zone Mentality --- and it is pretty informative.

Thank you very much for the really -- I hope eye opening ---post.  T
