The city has asked a local nonprofit to stop feeding homeless people in a public park – the latest move in Costa Mesa’s attempt to reduce its homeless population.

Dwelling 222 hosts a potluck every Wednesday at Wilson Park as a way to build relationships with homeless people. But city staffers say the meals have helped turn the area into a magnet for vagrants.

Faced with an increase in crime and drug use around the park, Costa Mesa asked group organizers about six weeks ago to stop feeding homeless people there. After the nonprofit declined, the city removed the park’s picnic tables, locked its bathrooms and downsized its bike racks.

Costa Mesa’s message is clear: This park is for taxpayers to enjoy, and the congregation of homeless people needs to leave for that to happen.
