Phoenix-area leaders discuss solutions to childhood trauma [AZCentral.com]

Discussions on how to help traumatized children echoed across the walls of Phoenix Children’s Hospital on Thursday morning.

Nicole Stanton, the first lady of Phoenix and founder of the Dion Initiative for Child Well-Being and Bullying Prevention at Arizona State University, addressed a panel of business and government elites on how to handle adverse childhood experiences afflicting Arizona’s youth. She began the forum with a question: Are you surprised nearly a third of Arizona’s children experience two or more adverse childhood experiences?

Adverse childhood experiences can include anything from having a family member in prison to emotional neglect, experiencing discrimination or even growing up with just one parent.

Timothy Ogle, executive director of the Arizona School Boards Association, said that statistic didn’t surprise educators.
