Patrick Kennedy speaks in New Haven of national opportunity to deal with trauma

Former U.S. Rep. Patrick Kennedy talks with Alice M. Forrester, executive director of the Clifford Beers Clinic in New Haven, at a panel discussion about the effects of trauma on New Haven and other communities.

America must recognize trauma as a crisis in its communities and make mental health care part of every social institution, former U.S. Rep. Patrick Kennedy told a panel Wednesday.

Kennedy, who sponsored key mental health legislation while in Congress from Rhode Island, said national attention on the mental health care needs of returning soldiers will spur government to act on the ripple effects of trauma on huge segments of the country.

“Honestly, I think we’re in a period of incredible opportunity to change the paradigm,” said Kennedy, who has been open about his own issues dealing with bipolar disorder and drug addiction and was a lead sponsor of the Mental Health Parity bill.
