Opportunities to learn about adverse childhood experiences offered in Monona County [EnterprisePub.com]

Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) can affect everyone. ACEs are traumatic events that can dramatically upset a child’s sense of safety and well-being.

Traumatic events that occur in a child’s life are linked with a higher risk of experiencing medical, psychiatric and social issues into adulthood. This affects the child, family, school and community. Through treatment and compassion, we can lessen the impact of ACEs on everyone!

Discussions on Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACES) are being offered. A program was held on Oct. 18 at the Onawa Community Center. Lori Hayungs, Iowa State University Extension & Outreach Families Specialist, shared about the Adverse Childhood Experience study, along with neurobiology that explained why ACEs have so much effect in people’s lives, and what we can all do to dramatically improve health and resilience for this and future generations.

The interactive, evidence-based Connections Matter presentation explains how stress impacts the brain and why relationships improve individual and community well-being, and taking action is encouraged. Attendees will leave with practical ideas for taking action in their work, faith, neighborhood and friend networks.

A documentary viewing shows what one school did to help struggling students heal from chronic and adverse stress and trauma. Paper Tigers looks at the effects of trauma on the youth of Walla Walla, Wash., and how one community transformed its culture to respond. This look into the lives of the students at Lincoln High School is a successful example of how an entire system can change to better respond to childhood trauma.
