Opioid Abuse Jumps 6-Fold for U.S. Youth, Too Few Get Treated: Study [Consumer.HealthDay.com]

 

The rate of opioid addiction among Americans age 25 and under rose nearly sixfold from 2001 to 2014. But few young addicts get medical treatment that might prevent overdose or relapse, a new study finds.

Only about 27 percent of youths treated for addiction to prescription painkillers or heroin receive either buprenorphine or naltrexone, two recommended anti-addiction medications, researchers reported.
