Only love can stop war: a call to the world from a Northern Cheyenne chief [theguardian.com]

At theBattle of the Little Bighorn, 146 years ago, my ancestors defeated the US army’s Seventh Cavalry led by George Armstrong Custer, who had previously massacred Cheyenne people.

This 25 June, on the anniversary, I will make a call to end genocide to protect diversity. I do not make this call lightly. Rather, I am speaking with a great sense of urgency from lived experience.

For the Cheyenne, the genocide started with what the US army wrongfully called “the Indian wars”, when it was nothing more than the slaughter of our people, buffalo and horses to exterminate our way of life. It is this very genocidal mindset which now produces the climate crisis, further genocides, even the threat of nuclear war.

Dearest Carey:
Bless you for your gracious sentiments brimming with healing Love and Light. Humanity, in our young nation, is the Seventh Generation and Crazy Horse's Prophecy is manifesting.

“Upon suffering beyond suffering; the Red Nation shall rise again and it shall be a blessing for a sick world.

A world filled with broken promises, selfishness and separations.

A world longing for light again.

I see a time of seven generations when all the colors of mankind will gather under the sacred Tree of Life and the whole Earth will become one circle again.

In that day there will be those among the Lakota who will carry knowledge and understanding of unity among all living things, and the young white ones will come to those of my people and ask for this wisdom.

I salute the light within your eyes where the whole universe dwells.

For when you are at that center within you and I am in that place within me, we shall be as one.”.

Dear Dana,

Thank you so much for sharing this beautiful, insightful, healing and profoundly important post. I am sending a book to you, “Restoring the Kinship Worldview,” that I started reading three days ago. There is a listing in it that contrasts  “Common Dominant Worldview Manifestations” with “Common Indigenous Worldview Manifestations.” This chart, shared below, explains so much.

Thank you for being such a light sharer by keeping front and center our need to return to and honor Indigenous ways. If we don’t, survival is unlikely. We need to lean into an elevate and follow Indigenous wisdom if the earth is going to survive the long onslaught of colonialism that is killing humanity.
