Newtown victim's mom talks about child trauma

The children of Newtown are getting the help they need to deal with the lasting effects of Sandy Hook shooting, but what about other kids who face traumas every day?

"Ana Grace was executed while hiding in the tiny bathroom of her first grade classroom," said Nelba Marquez Greene, the victim's mother [at the Love Wins conference in Hartford, CTΒ on Monday]. "My son Isiah was in the building, but physically survived."

Greene lost her daughter Ana Grace at Sandy Hook Elementary, but she is also a mental health professional who is now an expert on the effect of trauma on children.

"Children and their exposure to adverse childhood experiences, it is a public health crisis, but it's preventable," she said.

For the survivors of Sandy Hook Elementary, it's obvious they suffered trauma, they're going to need help, but trauma also takes much more subtle forms: abuse, neglect, the loss of a loved one, and it's that kind of trauma that pediatricians need to detect.
