Education is among the highest stated priorities right out of the gate for the new administration. Besides the obvious—getting students and teachers back to school safely and quickly—major challenges remain, including around what some call “unfinished learning” and others call “learning loss" due to the pandemic. Further, the pandemic has deepened and laid bare enduring racial inequities in educational opportunities. The charge for the new administration is big. How can we apply lessons from the science of learning and development to address these challenges and reimagine education in America?

To find out, we were honored to speak with John B. King, Jr., our nation’s 10th Secretary of Education, who served under President Obama, for the latest episode of Turnaround for Children's podcast,The 180. King has dedicated his career to education. His parents were New York City public school teachers. He taught high school social studies and served as a middle school principal. Today, King is president and CEO of The Education Trust, a nonprofit organization that seeks to identify and close opportunity and achievement gaps, from preschool through college.
