My Daily Self-Care Routine

My goal for 2015 is to make some major lifestyle changes by creating a healthy, daily self-care routine.  I begin by focusing on gratitude every morning when I wake up.  I set a grateful intention for my life, my family, my health, and my passion for helping child sexual abuse survivors reconnect with their potential and inner goodness.

Then I decide what I’m going to fix for breakfast.  I never used to eat a nutritious breakfast, but now I do.  My favorite is a fruit or kale smoothie.

After I take my son to school, I head to the gym.  I work out at the YMCA at least three days each week.  Finding time to work out used to be a struggle.  Now I make exercising a top priority and plan my day around it.  On the days when I don’t go to the gym I do yoga at home or walk in the neighborhood.

When I return, I select a card from my angel deck and write about it in my journal if I feel I’m channeling something important for my life or career.  Then I work on computer until it’s time to pick up my son at 2:30 pm.

After dinner, I go back to work online for a few hours with my coaching clients.  I’m always reading and try to read a little in bed before I fall asleep around 10:00 pm.

Did I mention my cats?  They’ve taught me a lot about the importance of self-care.  They’re so silly and playful.  I love that about them.  One thinks he’s a dog.  He drops his toy at my feet, I throw it, and he leaps after it, bringing it back to me.  He always makes me laugh.

Throughout the day I try to be mindful of my body.  It’s too easy to live on autopilot.  I don’t want to do that anymore.  As an abuse survivor, I know how important it is to be aware of what I’m thinking and feeling and “who” is in charge: my wounded child or my loving adult.

Learning how to love myself by finding a way to integrate a daily self-care routine into my busy life has been an interesting journey.  As I slowly become comfortable with it, I find I want to do more and more for myself.  In many ways I feel like I’m finally falling in love with “me.”

Hey, it’s about time, right?
