Mental health first aid helps battle stress, trauma [HomeTownLife.org]

One of the standard questions in a children’s psychological evaluation is “What should you do if you cut your finger while playing?” This question attempts to solicit issues about the child’s awareness of safety and the use of judgment.

Medical CPR and first aid classes are more prevalently available now than ever before. Often sponsored by the American Red Cross, these trainings continue to be seen in medical and mental health facilities, high schools, day care centers, public and private businesses, athletic facilities and more. AED’s and CPR directions, and first aid kits are readily available.

But what about first aid for mental health?

Mental health first aid as defined by the Michigan Department of Mental Health is a course dedicated to providing individuals with the basic tools required to assist others in case of a developing mental illness or a mental health situation.
