Medicating Kids May Not Solve Problems - Florida

"I want this child medicated," the relative demanded.

"He's talking back to me."

"Since the child in question was 5, Dr. J. David Moore was unwilling to medicate without a full assessment of the boy and his home situation.

"Drugs should be the last resort," he said Saturday at a Parents and Teachers as Allies seminar on mental and behavioral disorders....

"Families, schools and doctors need to delve deeper into problems underlying children's difficulties and find more ways to deal with them, he and other speakers said....

"The conference at The Lakeland Center, sponsored by National Alliance on Mental Illness Polk County, was designed to improve coordination among those groups....

"Children would be safer, he said, if "there was more of an alliance among schools and families and the mental health organizations, and we were talking about the issues and trying to solve them instead of protecting our turf."
